Sciatica: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Sciatica is not a leg pain; it is a nerve pain that starts in the lower back and travels along the sciatic nerve all the way to the foot. Dr. Amr Elyamany explains what causes it and why waiting is a mistake.
Why does sciatica happen?
The most common cause is a herniated (slipped) disc in the lower spine pressing on the nerve. Every movement adds pressure on the irritated nerve, which is why the pain usually gets worse when you move.
What does it feel like?
- Pain that starts in the lower back and runs down the leg to the foot
- Numbness or tingling in the leg
- A burning sensation along the nerve
- Weakness, and sometimes difficulty standing steadily
How is it treated?
Painkillers can calm the pain, but they do not treat the cause. Treatment aims to reduce the pressure on the nerve:
- Strengthening the back and core muscles
- Correcting posture and the way you sit
- Physiotherapy under supervision
- In selected cases, a suitable procedure after examination
Key takeaway: If the pain travels from your back down your leg, do not wait and do not dismiss it: sciatica is a nerve problem, and early treatment prevents it from growing.
