Discoid Lateral Meniscus: A Knee Cartilage Deformity You May Not Feel

Your knee may not be normal even though you feel nothing serious. Dr. Amr Elyamany explains a condition called a discoid lateral meniscus, a deformity of the outer cartilage of the knee.
What is it?
It happens when the cartilage does not form properly during birth and development. The outer meniscus in the knee therefore does not do the job it should, so the pressures around the knee are much higher than they should be, which leads to problems later.
Symptoms you may notice
- Pain when you move
- Pain with running
- Clicking or grinding at times
- Locking, where the leg seems to catch and get stuck
Why you should not ignore it
Ignoring the problem is not the solution. These small problems can develop and grow, leading to bigger complications for the joint. If you feel a strange pain in the knee or constant clicking, see a specialist doctor.
Key takeaway: Knee pain and persistent clicking, especially in a young person, are worth an examination and an MRI.
When to see a doctor
- Knee pain with running or twisting that keeps returning
- Clicking or catching in the knee
- A knee that locks
