3 Common Causes of Dizziness

Feeling dizzy is not always something simple. Dr. Amr Elyamany explains three common causes, and why a repeated feeling of dizziness should be checked.
1. Standing up quickly
When you get up fast, your blood pressure drops for a moment, and blood does not reach the brain quickly enough. Rising slowly, especially after lying down or sitting for a long time, helps.
2. Dehydration
Your body needs more water than you think. Not drinking enough is a very common and easily fixed cause of dizziness.
3. Low vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 affects the nerves and the blood vessels of the brain, so a deficiency can cause dizziness along with tiredness and tingling. A blood test will show your level.
Key takeaway: Listen to your body: dizziness that keeps returning is a reason to be checked, not just to sit down.
When to see a doctor
- Dizziness that keeps returning or is getting worse
- Fainting, chest pain, palpitations or breathlessness
- Weakness, slurred speech or a severe headache with the dizziness (an emergency)
