5 Simple Habits That Will Greatly Improve Your Sleep

Good sleep is when your muscles, joints and brain recover. Dr. Amr Elyamany shares five simple habits that can noticeably improve the quality of your sleep.
The five habits
- Keep fixed sleep times. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even at the weekend. This sets your biological clock.
- Stay away from your phone before bed. Switch off the phone and TV 30 to 60 minutes earlier; the blue light lowers melatonin, the sleep hormone. Prepare your body with a warm bath, soft lighting or a little light reading.
- Be careful with food and drinks. No coffee, tea or energy drinks after about 4 pm, and no heavy meal just before bed.
- Make the bedroom comfortable: dark, quiet and at a moderate temperature.
- Choose a comfortable mattress and pillow that suit you.
Small things, big difference
None of these habits is difficult, but together they make a large difference to how well you sleep. Start with one or two and add the rest over the next weeks.
Key takeaway: Consistent timing, a screen-free wind-down and a comfortable room are the foundations of better sleep.
When to see a doctor
- Trouble sleeping that lasts more than a few weeks
- Loud snoring with pauses in breathing, or tiredness despite a full night
- Pain that wakes you at night
