Your legs can show early signs of problems in your circulation and general health. Dr. Amr Elyamany lists signs that should send you to a doctor, including some that are easy to overlook.

The main signs

  • Swelling in the feet and legs: it may point to a problem in the heart, liver or kidneys.
  • Severe ankle pain: sometimes vitamin deficiencies, a high uric acid level or gout.
  • Numbness or tingling: it can be low vitamin B12 or damage to the peripheral nerves caused by diabetes.

Other important clues

  • Spider veins or varicose veins: these can be linked to standing for long periods and, in some cases, to liver problems.
  • Cold feet: usually a sign of poor circulation or anaemia.

What to do

Do not take any of these lightly. A clinical examination, a few blood tests and, if needed, a scan of the leg veins can show what is behind them. Moving regularly, avoiding long periods of standing still and raising your legs at rest can help in the meantime.

Key takeaway: Your body speaks to you through your legs: listen to it and get it checked.

When to see a doctor

  • Swelling in both legs, or new swelling with breathlessness
  • A painful, red, swollen calf (which can be a blood clot: an emergency)
  • Numbness or tingling that persists or is spreading
  • Cold, pale or blue feet
