3 Warning Signs in Your Back You Should Not Ignore

Your back speaks to you before things get serious. Dr. Amr Elyamany describes three signs that deserve your attention, why they happen and what you can start doing today.
1. Lower back pain
It is usually caused by weak back muscles or a herniated disc. What helps: walk for about 20 minutes a day, do back-strengthening exercises, and avoid sitting in a poor position for long periods.
2. Stiffness when you wake up
Morning stiffness can be linked to low vitamin D, among other causes. What helps: about 15 minutes of sunlight a day, a vitamin D blood test, and a supplement only if you are low and under medical supervision.
3. Pain together with numbness
Pain with numbness usually means pressure on a nerve. What helps: sit less, change your position often, and see a doctor if it continues, because the cause is either the nerves or the bones.
Key takeaway: Your body is talking to you; listen to it before a small warning becomes a bigger problem.
When to see a doctor
- Back pain that lasts more than a few weeks
- Numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs
- Stiffness that lasts for hours after waking
- Loss of bladder or bowel control (an emergency)
