ACL Myths and Facts: Surgery, Recovery and Getting Your Knee Back

Few injuries come with as many myths as a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Dr. Amr Elyamany answers four questions patients ask again and again.

"I heard a pop when I got hurt. Is my ACL torn?"

A pop combined with swelling at the time of injury makes an ACL problem likely. The examination and an MRI confirm it.

"Can a torn ACL heal by itself?"

A torn ACL does not grow back or knit together on its own. When the knee is unstable, the ligament has to be rebuilt surgically. Whether you need surgery depends on your age, your activity level and how unstable the knee is.

"My knee will never be the same after surgery."

This is a myth. If the operation is done well and rehabilitation is completed in a good place, the knee is expected to return to how it was.

"The operation is very painful and recovery is hard."

Another myth. There is pain, but not as much as people imagine, and the recovery is not difficult. What it does require is commitment: a patient who follows the rehabilitation programme.

Key takeaway: Good surgery plus committed rehabilitation is what brings the knee back, and fear of the operation should not delay a diagnosis.

When to see a doctor

  • A pop or a tearing feeling at the time of a knee injury
  • Swelling within hours of the injury
  • A knee that gives way when you turn or pivot
