Training in Ramadan: Before Iftar or After?

Do you train in Ramadan before iftar or after it? Dr. Amr Elyamany compares the two and explains which one is safer.
Before iftar
- Your energy is low.
- There is a risk of thirst and dehydration.
- The chance of injury is higher.
After iftar
- Your strength is higher.
- You concentrate better.
- The workout is safer, provided that your meal is not heavy and you do not go straight into the gym after a large meal.
A simple routine
Break your fast with dates and water, then a bowl of soup, and only then head to your workout, leaving a little time for the food to settle. Keep drinking water through the evening.
Key takeaway: The safest window is usually after iftar, with a light meal first and plenty of water.
When to see a doctor
- Dizziness, palpitations or extreme weakness during exercise
- Muscle or joint pain that lasts after training
- Any chronic condition (such as diabetes or heart disease) that changes how you should train while fasting
