5 Steps to Protect Yourself From an ACL Injury

An ACL tear can keep an athlete out for months, but many of these injuries can be prevented. Dr. Amr Elyamany shares five practical steps, and calls the fifth the most important.
The five steps
- Warm up well before any training or match.
- Strengthen the front and back of your thighs with exercises such as squats and lunges.
- Train your balance to prevent sudden falls.
- Keep a healthy weight: extra weight adds pressure on the knee and raises the rate of injuries.
- Learn to land correctly after a jump: knees slightly bent and arms forward, so the load is shared and balanced.
Why the landing matters most
Many ACL tears happen when an athlete lands stiff-legged or with the knee collapsing inward after a jump or a sudden change of direction. Landing softly, with bent knees and a stable trunk, spreads the force across the leg.
Make it a habit
These steps only protect you if they become part of every training week, not a one-off. A physiotherapist or coach can check your landing and movement pattern.
Key takeaway: Warm-up, strong thighs, balance, a healthy weight and a soft landing lower your risk substantially.
When to see a doctor
- A pop or a giving-way sensation in the knee during sport
- Swelling after a twisting injury
- A knee that feels unstable when you change direction
