Wrist Pain on the Little-Finger Side: A 10-Second Test for a TFCC Tear

Pain in one particular part of the wrist, particularly in gym-goers and racket-sport players, may signal an injury to a small but important structure called the TFCC (triangular fibrocartilage complex). Dr. Amr Elyamany demonstrates a quick test.

The test, step by step

  • Step 1: stabilise the wrist with your hands.
  • Step 2: hold the injured hand and press on it on the painful side, with a vertical (downward) pressure.
  • The result: if the person feels pain when you press on this part of the wrist, it is a strong indicator of a possible TFCC tear.

Why the TFCC matters

The TFCC is a cushion and stabiliser on the little-finger side of the wrist. It is very important for the wrist joint, and an untreated tear can lead to persistent pain and weakness.

An important warning

This test does not replace an examination by a doctor. It is an early alert that you need a specialist assessment before the condition worsens. Prevention is better than cure.

Key takeaway: A positive result means "get it checked", not "I have a tear": see a hand or orthopedic specialist.

When to see a doctor

  • Wrist pain on the little-finger side that lasts more than a couple of weeks
  • A click or clunk when you rotate the wrist
  • Pain when gripping, lifting or weight-bearing on the hand
