Is Calcium Enough for Strong Bones? Vitamin D and Back Pain Myths

Ask most people how to strengthen their bones and they will say calcium. Dr. Amr Elyamany explains why that is only part of the answer, and clears up a myth about rest for back pain.
Is calcium alone enough?
No. Calcium is only one of the building blocks of bone. Bone also contains protein and collagen, and it depends on vitamin D and many hormones to form properly. That is why calcium alone is not enough.
Does low vitamin D cause pain all over the body?
Yes, it can. Vitamin D works like a hormone and acts in many organs, not only the bones, so a shortage can cause aches throughout the body.
Is complete rest the best treatment for back pain?
No. Rest helps at the start, when the pain is severe. Later on you need movement to strengthen the muscles and stabilise the back so that the pain does not return.
Key takeaway: Strong bones need a full team (protein, vitamin D, minerals and movement), and a bad back needs to be moved, not just rested.
When to see a doctor
- Widespread bone or muscle aches with tiredness
- Back pain that lasts more than a few days of rest
- A fracture after a minor fall
