If you already know your outer knee hurts after running, here is the practical plan Dr. Amr Elyamany gives runners, step by step. Save it and come back to it whenever the pain returns.

Step 1: adjust your running

If the pain is new, stop running for a few days: not complete inactivity, but replace running with lighter activities such as cycling or simple walking.

Step 2: calm the pain

  • Put ice on the outer side of the knee for 10 minutes, two to three times a day.
  • If the pain is bothersome, a simple painkiller can be taken, but under a doctor's supervision.

Step 3: strengthen, and this is the important one

Strengthen the muscles above and around the knee with this daily exercise:

  • Lie on your side.
  • Slowly lift your top leg upwards.
  • Do 10 repetitions, for three sets.

This strengthens the gluteus medius, a key muscle for reducing pain on the outer side of the knee in runners.

Key takeaway: Ease off, ice, and above all strengthen: three steps that solve the problem for most runners.

When to see a doctor

  • Pain that has not eased after two weeks of the plan
  • Swelling, locking or the knee giving way
  • Pain at rest or at night
