Physiotherapy vs Massage: What Is the Difference?

Many people think physiotherapy and massage are the same thing. Dr. Amr Elyamany explains that there is a big difference between them, and answers a second common question about how long to use a brace.
What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a physical treatment that focuses on the muscles, movement and range of motion, and on reducing pain. It follows a plan aimed at restoring function.
What is massage?
Massage works on the soft tissues and fascia. It can feel good and relieve tightness, but on its own it does not rebuild strength or restore movement the way a physiotherapy programme does.
Does a brace or splint always rest the joint?
At first, yes, it protects the joint. But wearing it for too long weakens the muscles and tissues around it, and the pain can end up worse than the original.
Key takeaway: Massage can relax you; physiotherapy treats the problem. Use a brace when it is prescribed, and for as long as it is prescribed.
When to see a doctor
- Pain that returns each time the massage effect wears off
- Stiffness or weakness after a splint or cast is removed
- Any injury that is not improving after a couple of weeks
