Can You Play Sport After Meniscus Surgery? A Realistic Timeline

Watch the video on YouTube

"Doctor, can I play sport after my knee cartilage operation?" The answer is not just yes or no. Dr. Amr Elyamany explains that the cartilage needs time to heal, and gives a stage-by-stage timeline.

The first six weeks

The cartilage needs time to heal to prevent pain coming back or a second injury. During the first six weeks there is no strenuous sport. Instead, physiotherapy begins with simple exercises to strengthen the muscles around the knee and hip and to restore the full range of movement.

From about three months

Gradually you return to light sport such as swimming or walking.

Intense sports

Vigorous activities such as the gym or football must be under the supervision of your doctor. They are usually delayed until about six months to a year after surgery.

What makes the difference between patients

The main difference from one patient to another is commitment to the physiotherapy and rehabilitation programme.

Key takeaway: Rest first, then rehabilitate, then return: the patient who follows the programme is the one who gets back to sport.

When to see a doctor

  • Knee swelling or pain that returns during rehabilitation
  • A feeling of catching, locking or giving way
  • You are unsure whether you are ready for a return to sport
