A Lump Behind the Knee: What Is a Baker's Cyst and How Is It Treated?

You notice a small cyst or lump behind your knee and do not know why it is there. Dr. Amr Elyamany explains that it is most likely a Baker's cyst, and that the right treatment starts with finding the cause.
What causes a Baker's cyst?
The cyst is fluid from the knee joint that collects behind the knee. Behind it there is usually another knee problem, such as:
- Knee osteoarthritis
- Rheumatic (inflammatory) diseases
- Gout
- A torn cartilage that leaks joint fluid
Is draining the fluid the answer?
The fluid can be drawn off, and this gives temporary relief, but it is not the right treatment because the cyst returns if the cause is still there.
The right treatment
- Reduce the load on the knee.
- Treat any inflammation in the joint.
- Repair a torn cartilage when that is the cause.
- Treat gout or another underlying condition.
Key takeaway: Correct treatment begins with the correct diagnosis: treat what is feeding the cyst, not just the cyst.
When to see a doctor
- A new lump or swelling behind the knee
- Pain or tightness that increases as the cyst gets bigger
- Sudden calf pain and swelling, which can look similar and needs urgent assessment
