Sudden Thumb Pain When Opening a Bottle? De Quervain's Tenosynovitis Explained
You go to open a bottle of water and feel a pain in your thumb, with some numbness, and you do not know why. Dr. Amr Elyamany explains that this may be a condition called De Quervain's tenosynovitis.
What is it?
It is inflammation of the tendons that move the thumb, beside the wrist joint. The tunnel they run through becomes narrow, so the tendons rub against it, which causes pain that increases over time, with numbness in the thumb.
Common causes
- Heavy use of mobile phones, and lots of thumb movement
- Pregnancy and childbirth, especially new mothers who carry a baby a lot
- Jobs that need repeated hand movements, such as typing or sewing
- Injuries, sports-related or not
Diagnosis and treatment
- Diagnosis: a proper examination and an ultrasound scan; an MRI if the ultrasound is not clear enough.
- First step: warm compresses, a splint or thumb brace, less thumb movement, and anti-inflammatory medicines by mouth or applied to the skin.
- Cortisone injections help but are best not repeated often.
- Surgery is the last option, if conservative treatment and physiotherapy fail: a simple keyhole or 1 cm incision that frees the tendon.
