Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A 60-Second Self-Test and How It Is Treated

Try this test right now. If you get pain, tingling or a pins-and-needles feeling in three fingers, you may have carpal tunnel syndrome, which means your median nerve is being squeezed at the wrist. Dr. Amr Elyamany says not to worry, because the treatment is simple.

The test

Hold your hands in the position shown in Dr. Amr's video for 60 seconds. (This is the classic wrist-flexion test, in which the wrists are held bent.) If you feel pain, numbness or tingling in the three fingers on the thumb side, the median nerve is probably compressed.

The treatment, step by step

  • A wrist splint (worn especially at night) and physiotherapy.
  • A local cortisone injection if the inflammation increases; it often settles the problem.
  • A simple operation if the symptoms continue: the nerve is freed (released), either with a keyhole (endoscopic) technique or through a small incision.

Why treat it early

A nerve that is squeezed for too long can be permanently damaged, causing weakness and constant numbness, so do not wait for it to become severe.

Key takeaway: Numb or tingling fingers are worth a check: treatment is usually simple, and earlier is better.

When to see a doctor

  • Tingling or numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers, especially at night
  • Dropping things or weakness in your grip
  • Symptoms that persist despite a splint
