Why an X-Ray Sent on WhatsApp Cannot Replace a Medical Examination

It is very common to be sent an X-ray on WhatsApp with the question, "What is your opinion, doctor?" Dr. Amr Elyamany explains why a diagnosis cannot be made from a phone screen, and why that is in your interest.
Three reasons
- The doctor has not seen the patient: how you walk, what an examination shows, your age or your real complaint.
- An X-ray alone is not enough. There can be a problem in the image and no symptoms, or the opposite.
- Image quality. Pictures on WhatsApp are never the same as those displayed on the clinic's computer, where the X-ray is properly viewed.
What to do instead
Technology has changed our lives, but in medicine nothing replaces the doctor seeing the patient, examining, and treating. Book an appointment, bring your scans and reports with you, and let the doctor examine you, diagnose you and make a treatment plan.
Key takeaway: Medicine is not a WhatsApp message: a diagnosis begins with a face-to-face examination.
When to see a doctor
- You have an X-ray or MRI and are unsure what it means
- Pain that has lasted more than a couple of weeks
- You have been advised to have surgery and want a second opinion
