Ankle Sprain, Achilles Tendinitis and Tennis Elbow: Do You Need Surgery?

Three patient questions come up again and again. Dr. Amr Elyamany answers each one: do these common injuries need an operation?

Grade 2 ankle sprain

A grade 2 sprain usually takes two to three weeks to heal fully. It does not need an operation. At first we use cold compresses and anti-inflammatory medicines, and then physiotherapy to restore strength and movement.

Achilles tendon inflammation

No surgery is needed. It needs physiotherapy and rehabilitation, together with gentle stretching exercises for the Achilles tendon so that the inflammation does not come back.

Tennis elbow

The treatment is physiotherapy and anti-inflammatory medicines, and cutting down the use of the arm in the activities that trigger the pain.

Key takeaway: Most of these injuries settle without surgery, as long as they are diagnosed properly and rehabilitation is followed.

When to see a doctor

  • An ankle that stays unstable or keeps giving way
  • Pain and swelling that do not improve after two to three weeks
  • Tendon pain that keeps coming back despite treatment
